A dream comes true

It was just a dream, enfolded in indefinites and tribulations.
My love for film and documentaries didn’t necessarily mean I was struck with the thought of actually doing one.
Or more accurately; realize I actually could if I wanted.

So, In August I met my good friend Azaa and as we walked to the bar we had agreed on, we decided to do a documentary. In Sudan. It took twenty seconds. Bam! It sounded something like this:

“I want to travel over Christmas, are you going to Sudan this year?”
“Yes I am!”
“Can I join?”
"Yes, sure!”

And when in Sudan, why not make a documentary? We both realized we shared the same dream but really never dared to take the step and just do it. We discussed the clichéd ways of portraying Africa and the absolute need of showing other things about the continent than famine, war and poverty. There are so many more than these, indeed important issues, but why not show richness, color and creativity for once?

Our core idea is about this well needed break from the stereotypes.
It’s about a boy who was raised in an orphanage like so many other kids in Sudan. About a boy who defied his expected path in life by letting his love for poetry and language be the cardinal beacon. This boy writes prose in Arabic, French and English and dreams of becoming a successful and well known author.

His story is too important to not be told and we will not let it slip through our fingers. So we’re going to Sudan in December to start shooting the life of Bakri.

Stay tuned for more about our journey and our project.
